In October 1885, the world’s first real car was developed by German Karl.Benz,
but at that time, car inventors generally believed that lighting was not necessary,
so cars were not equipped with car headlights.
In 1887, a driver lost in the dark while driving a car, a farmer used a portable light to guide him home,
so the household portable light became the first car headlight.
The development of car headlights is mainly divided into six stages.
The development history of car headlights
1.Acetylene headlights
In 1909, acetylene gas was first used as a light source for car headlights and continued until 1925.
Acetylene is a flammable gas, which is generated by the chemical reaction of calcium carbide in the headlights with water.
The flame of acetylene is relatively bright when it burns, so it was widely used as headlight lighting fixtures at that time.
2.Incandescent headlights
In 1913, the spiral tungsten filament was used as an incandescent lamp filament.
American Cadillac cars use such lamps to make headlights, opened the era of car electrical lighting.
The incandescent lamp is the first “electric lamp” that is really used for car lighting.
It uses electricity to heat the filament to an incandescent state and emit light.
In 1925, all cars leaving the factory were equipped with electrical lighting.
3.Halogen headlights
Halogen lamp is an advanced version developed on the basis of ordinary incandescent lamp.
Compared to incandescent lamp, its lifespan is extended by 2 to 3 times, its brightness increased by 1.5 times.
Early halogen lamp still had various problems such as insufficient stability,
but with its continuous technical improvement, it has been used until now.
4.HID xenon Headlights
HID refers to high intensity discharge lamp. Compared with halogen lamp,
the technical progress of the xenon lamp is overwhelming.
Under the condition of lower power than halogen lamps, xenon lamp is more than 3 times brighter than halogen lamps,
and its lifespan is 10 times longer than ordinary halogen lamp.
However, xenon lamp also has disadvantages.
It requires a ballast to convert the vehicle voltage to a stable high voltage.
Its structure is more complicated and the cost is much higher than halogen lamp.
Therefore, xenon lamp and halogen lamp coexist for a long time.
LED refers to light-emitting diode, which is the most promising new solid-state light source at present.
As the light source for car headlights, it has many advantages such as long life, small size, low energy consumption,
anti-vibration and impact, fast lighting speed, flexible design, and flexible control.
With the development of LED light source technology,
it has become an inevitable trend to replace the traditional light bulb light source for car headlights.

6.Laser Headlights
Compared with LED headlight, laser lamp is smaller in size under the same luminous flux,
the light is not dazzling, and the lighting distance is further.
Its lighting distance can generally reach 600-700 meters.
The current laser lamp is still in the early stages,
and there are still many difficulties in the road to popularization, such as high cost and huge heat generated during lighting.
These problems still need to be overcome.
